Scoreline: South Africa 250/9 Alviro Petersen 64 (65), Amla 57 (72) | Anderson 3
England win comfortably in 46 overs Paul Collingwood 105 (110), Jonathan Trott 87 (119)

When Trott scored his hundred on debut during the Ashes, it seemed almost obligatory to applaud him cursorily, in the hope that you could safely ignore him in future. But every time he’s played international cricket since, it’s pretty hard to do that, especially when you’re making highlights. I mean, for years I opted to ignore Collingwood most of the time he batted, but when you’re forced to watch Collingwood bat (for example, while making highlights) you slowly learn to appreciate the value he adds to a team that has for a while now been the object of ridicule in limited over cricket (doesn’t hold good anymore ever since KP returned and Morgan entered the middle/lower order – must do a video on him one of these days).

Watch cricket highlights: India vs Sri Lanka 1st Test, Day 4 from Ahmedabad played on November 19, 2009.

Scoreline: SL 760/7 declared – Lead by 334: Mahela 275, Prasanna 154 no Extras 45 (29 w+nb+byes)
India 190/2 Gambhir 74 no, Sehwag 51, Dravid 38

Sri Lanka repay India’s defensive tactics on Day 3 in kind on Day 4. Not sure if too many people care about history, but you’d think that the fact that SL were on the verge of winning their first ever test in India would have hastened their play while batting and not set relatively defensive fields (even when Amit Sharma was batting). They might still go on to win the test in the remaining 3 sessions, but if India bat out tomorrow, many would agree that it serves SL right.

Watch cricket highlights: India vs Sri Lanka Day 3 of the 1st Test being played at Ahmedabad.

Scoreline: Sri Lanka 591/5 Mahela Jayawardene 204 no, Prasanna Jayawardene 84 no, Samaraweera 70

Even the listless Indian bowling and general demeanour in the field can’t take away from the class and significance (which often is one of the traits associated with a Mahela big knock). On a cursory level it might appear to be a knock that slowed up in its later half through defensive/negative tactics by India and physical exhaustion (as mentioned by Mahela postmatch). But its first 30 runs yesterday, set itself up by intimidation through use-of-feet against the spinners, resulting in a dispersed field right through today.

When Dravid was culling out his 170 odd, he was kept interested by the Lankan bowlers who looked at least keen when they turned up for a new spell. In contrast, Mahela looked almost bored at times today.

Scoreline: India 426 all out | Sri Lanka 275/3 Tilakaratne Dilshan 112 (133) | Mahela 36 no, Samaraweera 45 no – Zaheer Khan 2 wickets

Dilshan has had a mild dip in ignore in other ignoreats in the last few games he’s played. So what. Did anyone think they were onto something?

There was enough in the final session for the spinners and with Mahela at the wicket and Samaraweera’s current ignore, this game looks like it has a result attached to it. The morning session tomorrow could well indicate which side it favours.

Simply put, a beautiful test innings by Dravid harking back to the 2001-2004 period of his career when he was at his fluent best. Not often that you have a 170 odd with only a couple of semi-half chances given to the fielding side.

Watch highlights: Pakistan vs New Zealand – the 1st T20 played in Dubai on November 12, 2009.

NZ 112 all out

Maybe there’s something about Neil Broom domestically, but he’s been for all practical purposes one of the big beneficiaries of the injury phenomenon that has plagued NZ over the last year. For Pakistan however, two of their best (Nazir, Tanvir) made a super return while Fawad Alam seems a Ravindra Jadeja kind of befuddling choice.

Over the last year, Ross Taylor has been central to NZ’s chances in most games, but with him having a rare dip, it appears that all now rests with McCullum unless the glorious uncertainty that is Martin Guptill opts to differ.

Apart from the T20 Champions playing like that and the Aamer-for-captain/opener banners, also noteworthy was the straight face maintained by the NZ physio as she walked a groin-induced waddling Redmond out of the ground.

Everything you love about watching the Pakistan team play cricket across a series or two rolled into one incredible game. NZ as a team has been a personal favourite for a while but if Aamer/Ajmal were able to get over the line, it would have been the perfect response to all the allegations in recent times about a team that’s the T20 World Cup champions and a Champions Trophy semifinalist (not sure if that counts, but anyhow). There have been teams that have been revered for far less.

Sachin Tendulkar 175 vs Australia | Hyderabad 2009

I

II

Scoreline: 175 (141) in a total of 347. 19×4, 4×6

Most Sachin fans would probably regard his 143 at Sharjah vs Australia – the sandstorm match – as his best in ODI cricket. India lost that game too but his knock ensured a place in the Final on that occasion. So no one really cared about the result.

Tendulkar fans on their own rarely give a damn about whether India wins or not, but it’s the cynical oh-he-can’t-finish-a-game barbs from the fringe wankers that makes one desperately crave for a result/purpose to be attached to any Tendulkar innings. Personally, through most of the ’90s, I rarely watched India bat once Tendulkar got out. And then I grew older and among other garbs, donned the enjoy-the-game one that acquired pretentious proportions whenever Tendulkar had had a bad day.

So how good was this knock. Memory can be unreliable and so comparing your excitement levels in two games on either end of a decade can be fuzzy. Especially when hormones existed in your body only during one of those games. The Australian bowling attack in the 1998 game had relatively better names – Warne in particular bowled super despite going wicketless. But I doubt they bowled any better than McKay, Watson, Bollinger, Hilfenhaus and Hauritz did in this particular game. In fact, Watson handled Tendulkar’s stepping-out attempts to Kasprowicz him, much better. You add a higher total to the chase and I’d think this is his best ever in ODIs (thus far).

It’s been 24 hours since the Tendulkar knock happened. With clarity slowly returning – who cares about the result. We never really did.

Shahid Afirid shone with both bat and ball as Pakistan took a 1-0 lead by beating New Zealand by 138 runs in the first ODI at Abu Dhabi Stadium here on Tuesday. The all-rounder smashed a blistering 50-ball 70 and then took two for 46 in his 10 overs. Chasing 288, New Zealand were bowled out for 149 in 39.2 overs after Afridi, Kamran Akmal and Khalid Latif hit half-centuries to help Pakistan reach 287-9. The New Zealand chase never got off the block as Umar Gul set the pace for Pakistan early by sending back Brendon McCullum (21) and Martin Guptill (five) early. Ross Taylor (zero) and Scott Styris (five), making a return to the national side, too disappointed the Kiwis. Opener Aaron Redmond (52) held one end up and with skipper Daniel Vettori (38) stitched a responsible 69-run stand before falling leg before to Saeed Ajmal. An Afridi double blow off consecutive balls hastened the inevitable as Vettori and Nathan McCullum walked back with New Zealand reeling at 139-7.

Pakistan captain Younis Khan after winning the toss opted to bat first to be jolted by a roaring opening overs by Shane Bond that trimmed down Pakistan opening stand as Salman Butt edged back to Brendon McCullum for a four-ball duck. Younis was the next man back in hut without ticking score, caught behind off Bond for three-ball duck. Mohammad Yousuf, who was looking set for a big score, lost his wicket to a run-out for 30, followed by Umar Akmal – whose stumps were knock off by Daniel Vettori. Meanwhile Latif was steady and more intense in building his innings added 101 runs partnership with Shahid Afridi for fifth wicket stand earlier features another 57-run partnership with Mohamamd Yousaf to recover from a precarious 2-0. Afridi batted for a brisk innings before Jacob Oram accounted him as Ian Butler made no mistake with the catch at short fine leg position. Latif in the meantime completed his first 50 off 93 balls with the help of 2 fours however dislodged by skipper Vettori.

Kamran's then launched a brutal counter attacks and added 86 off just 37 balls for the seventh wicket with Abdul Razzaq, who made 20-ball 26 before Scott Styris grabbed a skied by Razzaq off Butler. Akmal however remained unbeaten hit four sixes in his 67 off 43 balls. An embarrassing capitulation by New Zealand in the opening one day international against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. The Black Caps have been beaten by 138 runs, after an abysmal performance with the bat. After losing the toss and fielding first, New Zealand grabbed two quick wickets to leave Pakistan reeling at none for two in the third over. Ball continued to dominate bat with the Black Caps still in charge in the 24th over - the home side struggling at 75 for four. The second one dayer is in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
